Find Journal Articles in PubMed

Search PubMed using RefWorks
For this class, it is recommended that you use RefWorks to search PubMed following these linked directions:
How to Search PubMed through RefWorks.
RefWorks will generate a bibliography for you and give you links to interlibrary loan forms that are ready to send for each article.

Search using PubMed's Advanced Search
If you are not finding articles on your topic using the RefWorks features, you may want to use the PubMed Advanced Search directly and limit by date range (e.g. 2000 - 2006), or limit Publication Type by clinical trial, or limit Filter by humans, or limit Language by English, or limit Journal by any of the recommended journals on this page.

You can then copy the search string from the PubMed search results screen in the "Search for" box into the RefWorks Quick Search box, so you will be able to generate a bibliography and use the Find It button to access the full article.
For example, enter this search string into the RefWorks Quick Search box:
(("clinical trial"[Publication Type]) AND ("humans"[Filter])) AND (prion disease)

Getting the complete articles
  • In RefWorks: On the results screen, click the Find It button to link to either:
    • the full text of the article
    • the Library Catalog record for that journal to see if we own the year in which your article was published
    • an interlibrary loan form for your article
Note: A PubMed article that has a publication year within the past few months and does not have a volume and issue number is not yet available via interlibrary loan.
  • If you cannot wait for interlibrary loan, and the article is not available at Lake Forest College:
Rosalind Franklin University (formerly "Finch") is a Medical School only 5 miles north of Lake Forest College. The Donnelley and Lee Library Reference desk has a list of the journals available at Rosalind Franklin, or you may call their Library at (847) 578-3000 x3650. The use of this private university library is part of a reciprocal community outreach program.
