For this class, most of the information you will use will come from your assigned readings.

You can find current news articles by searching in the Lexis-Nexis or Scientific American databases, or in the Discover or New Scientist journals using the links provided in this guide.

If you wish to do more advanced research, try searching the PubMed Central database or the journals Nature and Science using the links provided in this guide.

To better understand these more technical articles, consult Dr. DebBurman, peer teacher Grace Dunford’09, or your peer mentors, the BIO480 Neural Frontiers (biology senior seminar) students.

You are required to get your drafts read by tutors Melissa Schramm, Julie Wang, Michael Fiske, or Danielle Clark in the Writing Center.

Critical Review

Write a 1000-word review to the Editor of the Eurkaryon for its student readers, providing a joint assessment of the movies, Away From Her and Awakenings.
Support your opinions using your summer readings, Chicago trip, and your own personal experiences with neurologies like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, if any.

Narrative Response Paper

Tell the story of your life (from your birth as neuron till your death) based on the PBS Video Series, The Secret Life of the Brain.
Use comic art to illustrate your story. The comic should add to the story, not just decorate it.
A free 30-day trial of the Comic Life software is available for download and might be useful.
Two examples of graphic essays that are composed entirely of comics are Comic 1 from the journal Nature and The Story of Synthia from ETC Group.
